Writers testing a retro dungeon crawler

From a Redchurch Street back room

DungeonGameHeroes started in 2016 as three friends arguing about the best way to solo a raid boss above a Shoreditch record shop. Today we publish four longform pieces a week, each played to completion before a word gets written.

No sponsored scores, ever

We buy our own copies and reject every offer to inflate a review. Our scoring rubric is public, our playtime is logged, and our comment section is moderated by actual humans who finished the game too.

The Twin-Flame Warden guide got me through phase three on my seventh attempt after weeks stuck. The timing chart is gold.

Finally a review site that actually finishes the games. Their indie picks have genuinely reshaped my backlog this year.

The retro deep-dive on 80s dungeon crawlers was a nostalgia bomb. Would love more coverage of Amiga-era classics.

The Members' Vault map packs are worth every penny. Cobalt Keep floor 12 would have taken me hours to chart alone.

Frequently asked

How do you score games?

Every game is played to completion, or for at least 30 hours on open-ended titles, before a score is assigned. We use a public five-pillar rubric covering combat, exploration, story, performance and value. No score is ever influenced by a publisher.

What does the Members' Vault include?

Vault members get downloadable dungeon maps, boss timing charts and ad-free reading for £6/month. You also get early access to guides 48 hours before they go public and a monthly members-only livestream Q&A.

Can I pitch a guide or review?

Yes — we commission freelance writers regularly. Send a short outline through the contact form with links to any previous work. We pay £180 per accepted longform piece and reply to every pitch within a week.

Do you cover retro consoles?

Absolutely. Our Retro Deep-Dives run every Friday and span everything from ZX Spectrum dungeon crawlers to 90s arcade beat-em-ups. We test on original hardware where we can and note emulation settings otherwise.
